Thinking of getting a new camera

I’ve owned a Nikon D7000 for a couple years now and managed to pick up a few good lenses over the years, but the rig is kind of boring me lately. I like everything that it is capable of, but it almost seems like overkill for most of the photography that I do. I’ve recently had my eyes on a Fujifilm X100s. Does anyone have long term experience with a Fujifilm or even with this specific camera?

Kinja'd!!!

My cousin bought one a few months ago and I got to use it a bit on a family vacation a couple weeks ago. Every time I used it, I was blown away. Extremely easy to use and it seems like a camera that would be perfect for stuff that I shoot. It’s a compact little thing so a lot easier to haul around than my Nikon and three individual lenses. Lemme know what you guys think!

Great camera’s. The company is a little...off...in that it has its own quirks and there are some strange issues with the sensor I never found out if they solved (white blooms on the highlights). Other than that, the x100 is a very nice camera. Have you looked at Olympus or Panasonic? they both offer really nice intermediate cameras that are pocketable and perform really well.

Thanks for the info! I haven’t looked too much into other cameras so far. I just realized, after using my cousin’s Fujifilm, that my current set up was a bit of overkill. I’m open to other options though. Basically just want to find the best camera for my needs. I’m a fan of the fixed lens cause it’s easy and I’ve really come to dislike carrying around different lenses for different situations.

gf recently bought one... its a nice little camera. shes threatening to sell her d5100 cause she always goes for this little guy.

im liking the nikon j5 but no veiwfinder is a dealbreaker...maybe the next aw series will work for me.

leica has one in the price bracket worth looking at http://www.crutchfield.com/p_910CDKRED/Le…

lenses for the fuji are way spendy, though lensbaby recently annouced lenses for the x100t

We bought an olympus p&s with a larger sensor (1/1.7) and a fast builtin zoom and its almost completely supplanted my mirrorless in most situations.

I like the X100S cause it’s a fixed lens camera. Huge draw for me because I don’t like carrying around different lenses for different occasions haha

Thanks for posting that Leica! I’ve always loved those cameras but didn’t think they had any that were within my price range. I’ll definitely be taking a look at those.

I haven’t really heard too much about Olympus cameras, but I’m definitely going to keep my options open in case I do decide to sell my current rig and get something new. Thanks!

Considering the expense you’ve gone through for the lenses, consider a camera that can take those same lenses, or get an adapter for the new camera. I’ve stuck with Canons myself because everyone in my family has Canon-compatible lenses that I can borrow, and I can use my own lenses on my father-in-law’s professional-grade camera bodies if I want. That and I like how Canon does its thing, from the latest and greatest to their simple point-and-shoots.

See, it’s complicated. I have three different lenses for my Nikon and I can never seem to stick with one lens for what I’m trying to shoot. Sometimes I wanna bust out the big ass focal length lens and other times I want to use my tiny 35mm f1.8 lens. It’s a pain switching these out all the time and I feel like with the Fujifilm I could basically have everything that I needed all in one tight package. Like, for instance, today at The Great Race takeoff in Kirkwood, I switched my lenses probably 6 different times in the period of an hour due to how/what I was shooting.

Now I’m not a fantastic photographer, but I try. Maybe I’m not totally utilizing all of my lenses for everything they’re worth, but I think I could benefit with something like the Fujifilm and that’s why I’m contemplating selling all my stuff and buying a new rig.

Depending on your budget, a Sony RX100 could be a good option. They get really rave reviews. There’s three versions out now I believe.

If you did want to stick with interchangeable lenses cameras, a small fuji or Sony Mirrorless could work.

Fuji all the way!! I have the entry model, the X-A1, so no fancy sensor or wonderful viewfinder for me. I bought almost a year ago, took around 6000 pictures with it so far. It’s a great camera, and I’m glad I got this one over the competition. It offers great performance in low light (even though it doesn’t have the X-Trans sensor but a regular Bayer one), might be a bit slow to AF but I don’t really care about that (and it’s a problem Fuji solved with the latest firmwares to its high-end cameras).
The X100 is one of those great Fuji cameras, and the hybrid viewfinder is one of the best thing on the market according to reviews. Be sure to go for the S or T though. And the second-hand market will probably help you get a deal on it. Or be aware that Fujifilm does a LOT of cashback offers that usually help shed a couple hundred bucks from the retail price. When I bought my X-A1 (which was already at a crazy low price) I got a 100€ back from Fuji, and again in February when I bought a lens, another 100€ back in my pocket.

If you want to see what I manage to do with my Fuji, I post a bunch on Photography

Olympus doesn’t really have anything this nice and compact (they’ve kinda gone stale though, they should have a new lineup next year). That means you can pick a fairly decent E-P5 for around 60% off its original price. However, if you want a killer compact combo, you can go for a Lumix GM5 with the 20mm f1.7 lens (so roughly 40mm on a 35mm camera). That thing is very small and still manages to cram in an evf.

That said, the X100S is still an excellent camera.

I love the Fuji color rendition, I always felt that the NEX-7 I had before was a bit ‘cooler’ and doesn’t really fit what I like. Just check on Flickr or 500px if you like the colors. I have an X-Pro1 with 3 lenses (14, 18, 35) and am thinking of getting an X100t (mostly for the WiFi functionality) and love it :-).

Another camera to look into is the Nikon aw series. They make a pancake 10mm for the 1 series and if you are feeling freaky you can bust out the afs adapter and use afs lenses with a 2.7 multiplier factor. That means your 18 -100 mm becomes a 55-270 mm!

I almost ended up with one instead of my A7! That being said, I would go for the x100T if you have the money as it has a power saving mode (just using the optical viewfinder) that can get over 1000 shots out of the camera, which is amazing for a mirrorless camera!

Don’t get too excited about the leica, all it is is a panasonic camera with a red dot on it. Not worth the money.

Ya I’m looking to sell all my current gear to pay for the new one. Depending on how much I get, I’ll take a look at the T. Thanks!

My wife has an X10 and while she is not a camera nerd and had no desire for a dslr she does have a good eye for composition and color and demands all her future cameras be Fujis. Personally I like it alright and does about as good as I could expect for what it is but the menus are a little off putting to me (that said I probably only use this camera myself one every few months. I really like the color that comes out of this as well and like a lot of things about it, just wish it had a bigger sensor.

4 versions now, but yeah that’s probably my favorite compact camera right now considering they cram an evf in that tiny body.
